I must say, from this link you provided, I learned that Islam is just as I understood it to be. I will quote from that site:

Let's suppose members of my extended family for years had regularly killed, maimed, intimidated members of yours.
Let's further suppose we had a small library of family history books which relate in detail how our first ancestor was a shining example of killing, bullying, intimidating, double-dealing. Other tomes later went on to systematize, on this basis, how our extended family was destined to rule the world, discriminate against all other families and crush them into timid submission.
Our present family generation proudly and faithfully preserves this tradition.
But in addition, we have learned to complain that we are oh-so-misunderstood by those we threaten and kill, and protest that we really are the nicest people.
Now that would be a pretty outrageous thing for a family like ours to do, right?
